Revision as of 16:29, 2 November 2024

Jubilee's design objectives require that we minimize custom non-3D-printed parts to ensure the best "fabricability" for any builder using basic tools. However, certain components of the platform do necessitate some cnc machined metal parts that are core to how Jubilee operates as a toolchanging platform.

There are currently 5 parts that are required to be machined/purchased in order to complete a Jubilee build: the twist lock, the bed plate, the crossbar, the motor plates and the REL Hub .

Jubilee also offers machined variants to standard parts that can be purchased from third-party vendors or fabricated yourself. This page lists both the required machined parts for a standard Jubilee build, as well as the design files for the upgrade parts for more advanced builders. These are called out under the Machined Upgrades section of this page.

The Twist Lock

The Twist Lock Assembly

The twist lock shaft was modified to be compatible with the specifications presented in the E3D ToolChanger. However, as it has slightly different features because the underlying system operates differently, it is a distinct part.

Bed Plate

The bed plate is made from 6.35mm thick MIC6 Aluminum, colloquially known as cast tool plate. This tool plate arrives surfaced, meaning that it is extremely flat to a high degree of specification. MIC6 Aluminum also thermally expands evenly when heated, which means the plate will not warp when heated with a silicone mat as is common for 3D printers.

If you machine the bed plate yourself, you can purchase a 14in. x 14in. x 1/4in. sheet of cast tool plate from Midwest Steel Supply or OnlineMetals. Please refer to the dimensioned drawing for hole features.

Purchase Options

The bed plate can also purchased from one of various vendors either with or without magnets. Magnetic surfaces enable the use of a magnetic spring steel build plate. Non-magnetic surfaces can be made printable with surfaces like glass. The purchase options are as follows.

Machining Options

Crossbar

The crossbar carries the X-axis rail and the tool carriage. The current revision is a pocketed aluminum crossbar, enabling the machine to carry heavier tools and operate at higher temperatures without warping.

  • ~160 grams
  • Top Speed: 15000 - 20000 mm/min.

Note: the Deprecated Carbon Fiber Crossbar

Light and stiff. This option was part of the original design, made by requesting a custom DXF from CNCMadness and installing four press-fit composite inserts. Assembly Instructions remain on the GitHub wiki for V2.0.1.

  • ~140 grams + 20 grams with inserts
  • Top Speed: 15000 - 20000 mm/min.

Motor Plates

Metal motor plates serve as stiff connection points for the XY motors, which are put in tension by the belts. Unlike plastic plates, these will not warp over time due to excess motor heat, and they even offer light heat-sinking for the XY motors.

Motor Plates And Corner Plates

If you machine the motor plates and corner brackets yourself, you can purchase some .25" Aluminum plate from OnlineMetals.

The REL Hub

The Remote Elastic Lock Motor Hub

This wheel hub provides a secure connection to the REL motor.

Machining Options

This part can be turned from 6061 aluminum and then drilled and tapped on a milling machine.

Optional: Panels

The Electronics Back Panel

Note: these parts can also be laser cut from Acrylic.

Suggested materials: 3.0-3.2mm thick High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Polycarbonate, or Aluminum.

Electronics Back Panel

This panel contains bolt hole patterns for zip ties and mounting holes for multiple Duet Configurations.

Side Panels

These panels are optional. They add negligible structural support to the frame but are useful for preventing drafts and quick temperature changes inside the machine. They are also useful for discouraging cats from napping inside an active machine.
